Item #4343 This offering is for the pictured French Chassepot M1866 Saber Bayonet. In good looking condition it features the unique Yatagan type swept blade. 27.5 inches in overall length with a 22.5 inch blade.

This style dates from Franco Prussian War era for the French Chassepot infantry rifles. Maker marked on the riccaso, this French Bayonet has a blade steel blade sourced from a sub-contractor PDL, Peter D Luneschloss (Germany).

Appears to have been German captured during the Franco Prussian War, refurbished and reused. Typical German modifications include addition of the German type frog stud on the scabbard.

Blade is brite with a handsome ribbed brass grip. Few old frost pitting spots mostly on the handle metal. German unit marked on the cross guard. Scabbard is sound with a worn blued finish as pictured.

Makes a fine display for the military collector.
