Item #4436. This offering is for the pictured French Model 1831 Short Sword. In fair-good looking condition and also known as the Foot Artillery Sword.
Neo-classical design that was based on Roman gladius for the Legionaries. This served as a machete to clear sites for the artillery. This is also the inspiration for the US Model 1832 Short Sword that is nearly identical.
25 inches in overall length with a 19 inch blade. French makers marking on the riccaso is too faint to read but the reverse is faintly dated 1837. Handsome brass ribbed handle, blade has rust pitting and a chipped paint coating of some sort.
No scabbard is present.
