Item #2184 This offering is for the pictured lot of 3 Vintage 38-55 Winchester Empty Ammunition Boxes. Maker marked from Winchester, good overall with readable labels, box tops and internal dividers, wear and stains as pictured. This type of label dates from 1898-1900 and is the square cornered box. Cartridges would have been black powder loaded.
This caliber was developed in the 1880's and adopted by Winchester in the 1885 High Wall. The 48 grain black powder loading as shown on these boxes was adopted after 1887. Winchester continued to use the round in various rifles until about 1940.
