Antique. This offering is for the pictured New England Milita Musket. In good condition, this type of musket was produced between 1790-1840.

Following the US Revolutionary War, congress passed the 1792 "Milita Act", an Act to more effectively to provide for the National Defense, by establishing a Uniform Militia through the United States" The Act required white male citizens between the ages of 18-45 become members of their state militias and that every militiaman was to "provide himself with a good musket or firelock" within 6 months after passage.

The New England Milita Muskets were private purchase items and were produced by small makers and gunsmiths varying slightly in details but all of similar style. Full length svelte stock, barrel of 40-42 inches long, pinned to the stock, brass piping for the ram rod, .69 caliber +/- and a barrel that had a bayonet lug.

This one is a nice looking example, 40 inch smooth bore barrel, turned plumb in color. Lock made by Ketland. Brass trigger guard and trimmings. Original ram rod is present. Mechanically the lock set need attention. Weakly cocks and releases but the hammer flops around a bit.

American walnut stock is the 1795 design with checkered grip worn nearly smooth

Makes a fine item for the military collector, could be better with tinkering and is ready for over the mantle. American heritage!
